Most species can relate to the distress of sensing that their young ones are in danger. Unfortunately, mother ducks are especially familiar with this feeling because of the many threats that surround their ducklings in their early days.
These mother ducks have to remain vigilant for potential dangers such as aggressive drakes and any gaps that their tiny ducklings might fall into.
One mother duck in Phoenix recently found herself in a similar situation when her ducklings fell helplessly through a local sewer grate. Fortunately, a kind stranger happened to be taking a walk during the day when he came across the distressed duck.
A Man’s Regular Walk Becomes a Rescue Mission
A man was walking in Phoenix during the spring when he noticed a duck quacking loudly at him. The duck’s persistent behavior indicated to the man that it needed his help. As he approached the sewer grate that the duck was near, he could hear chirping noises coming from inside. Looking down, he saw several baby ducklings trapped in the sewer opening, calling out for assistance.
A man in Phoenix, while taking a walk during spring, was approached by a duck that was repeatedly quacking at him. The man realized that the duck was trying to draw his attention towards a nearby sewer grate. Upon inspection, he found out that several ducklings had fallen into the sewer and were chirping for help.
The man immediately called the Phoenix Fire Department, who arrived on the scene and worked hard to remove the sewer grate. Once the grate was removed, they were able to retrieve the ducklings by using a ladder and a cooler filled with leaves. After the rescue, the ducklings were reunited with their mother.
According to Rutgers Wildlife Conservation and Management Program, ducks are prone to such accidents due to their inability to sense danger associated with small openings.
