The group of wild Asian elephants comprises 15 members, including three calves. What’s even more remarkable is that one of the calves was born during the journey. The herd consists mostly of females, with only one male. However, the male has recently separated from the group and is now trailing about 4 kilometers behind.

For a period of 15 months, without any breaks, the elephants were carefully escorted by the police, and a total of 14 drones and 500 personnel have been deployed thus far. The local governments have made a tremendous effort to protect and guide the elephants, as well as to compensate for the damages caused by these playful giants along the way.

Scientists are both amazed and concerned about their epic journey, as this phenomenon may expose serious environmental issues in China. As the elephants move towards the north, there may be some problems with their habitat. Shrinking forests, degraded environment, and habitat loss may pose a threat to their future.
