A cluster of whale watchers nearly missed an incredible opportunity when a crafty whale surfaced behind their vessel while they were facing the opposite direction. They were all looking away, poised with their cameras waiting for a whale sighting, and almost overlooked the astounding encounter behind them.
Fortunately, one of the group members turned around in time to catch a glimpse of the enormous whale within a few feet of the boat before it dove back into the ocean.
The incredible encounter was captured on video after the boat’s occupants managed to record the events.
These images were captured from a boat located just behind, which showcases the remarkable scene unfolding.
Smith, who was on the boat, reported that the whale “gently and noiselessly raised its head above the water to look around.”
“I was in another small boat a few feet away and captured the moment just before everyone realized she was so near.”
The photographs capturing the close encounter were taken by Eric J Smith, who was on the boat behind. Reflecting on the experience, the 49-year-old photographer from Los Angeles stated:
“She slowly and silently rose her head high above the water to survey the area. I was on another boat several dozen feet away and managed to capture the moment just before everyone realized how close she was.”
“When everyone turned around, the whale quickly disappeared under the water. Everyone started cheering and laughing hysterically.”
“Capturing photos of whales requires a lot of luck, but it’s important to remain alert and prepared,” said the photographer. “During a whale-watching trip, it’s easy to become complacent due to the long waiting periods. It feels like every time you let your guard down, a spectacular breach happens.”
